Pascal Charbonneau In Edmonton

Results and report by Ford Wong

Here is a recap of Pascal Charbonneau's visit to Edmonton.

Pascal gave a very interesting lecture which centered around his victory against Anand at the recent Olympiad before an audience of 30 plus (exact count not known). Pascal's lecture started with a question and answer period where he answered any questions directed at him. Pascal also showed an interesting tactical ending from his game against Hussein (also played at the Olympiad).

After his lecture, everyone walked down to the other end of West Edmonton Mall where Pascal hosted a 28 player simul. The simul was played in Center Fountain court, a key junction in West

Edmonton Mall phase one. The simul gathered a large crowd of onlookers. Here are the final results:
1 Charbonneau - Tim Pradzinski 1-0

26 Charbonneau - Kris Smith 1-0
27 Charbonneau - Jared Nicholson 1-0
28 Charbonneau - Vlad Rekhson 0-1

In addition to getting first move, Pascal had the additional advantage of time on his side as any long games might conflict with the Oiler game. Fortunately, this didnot become a factor. GO OILERS GO!

Unofficially, Pascal took 2.5 hours to complete his simul. His overall record was 24-1-3. Young junior Richard Wang was the last game to finish and he held on until the end. Everyone received a medallion commemorating Pascal's tour for their efforts.

Thank you Pascal for your very interesting lecture and for your simul. It was a pleasure to have Irina and you come visit us. Pascal's next stop in Calgary where he will meet the dark side of Alberta. <== just kidding. Good luck in Calgary and your chess career, etc.

Unofficially, I believe that the final score from the simul in Grande Prairie was: Pascal 18 GPers 0. Pascal and Irina caught a ride back to Edmonton with Tim Pradzinski (thanks Tim) and got a taste of what a chess road trip to/from G.P is like (at least how long the drive is). They were fortunate to wile away the miles watching DVDs.

Special thanks to Larry Bevand and Chess N Math for sponsoring Pascal's tour.
